Updated Review Date: 06/03/2017
Original Review Date: 07/19/2011

If you're wondering how the various flavors of sugar free Hawaiian Punch stack up in terms of overall product quality then you've come to the right place. Today we'll be looking at all the available flavors of sugar free Hawaiian Punch to see if they're worth a try amongst all the other sugar free drink mixes on the market. But first a little background information... there are currently 10 sugar free flavors available which include Fruit Juicy Red, Wild Purple Smash, Berry Blue Typhoon, Lemon Berry Squeeze, Ocean Orange, Berry Limeade Blast, Green Berry Rush, Polar Blast, Lemonade and Lemon Lime Splash. All of these sugar free Hawaiian Punch flavors are available online at Amazon. Finding a grocery store with all flavors in stock is just about impossible, so if you can't find a particular flavor you're interested in at least you know it's available online.
Each flavor is caffeine free, low in calories, low in sodium and has 20% of the USRDA for vitamin C. Considering all this, sugar free Hawaiian Punch drink mixes are a decent alternative for diabetics or anyone that needs to watch their sugar intake but still wants to have some type of fruit drink.
All flavors are available in boxes of 8 Singles To Go packets, each of which flavors one 16 to 20 oz. bottle of water, and in 12-quart canisters which contain six 2-quart packets. 4 or 8 quart package sizes may also be available in your area or online.
Okay, with that handled it's time to move on to the nutrition information, ingredients and see how sugar free Hawaiian Punch scores.

The Scorecard for All Hawaiian Punch Sugar Free Drink Mixes

Based on a rating system of 4 total points, let's see how the various flavors of sugar free Hawaiian Punch score:

Taste: Very good in the taste department. Of the 7 flavors tasted over the course of two days neither the three taste testers or I had any aftertaste from the aspartame and acesulfame potassium combination. However, I've read other reviews about sugar free Hawaiian Punch mixes where the reviewers did have an aftertaste, and this just highlights the difference between the sense of taste in individuals. And though I can't say for certain, since all three taste testers including me had no aftertaste, I'd wager that a majority of people wouldn't either.
Overall taste is very good in my opinion as well as the opinion of the three taste testers who participated in the taste test. (+1)

Packaging Waste: The exterior packaging for the canisters and Singles to Go is fully recyclable but the interior foil-plastic packaging which holds the actual powdered mix may or may not be recyclable in your location. Whenever non-recyclable or hard to recycle foil-plastic is used on a product, there is a standard .5 point deduction.(+.5)

Value: The boxes of Singles To Go packets of sugar free Hawaiian Punch cost less than competing brands but consequently only offer 8 packets per box instead of the industry standard of 10 per box. However, the 12-quart canisters are sized at the industry norm. Considering these attributes, the value is actually on par with the competition. (+1)

Health Factor: The ingredients are fairly typical as far as sugar free drink mixes go. The salt content is quite insignificant, being many times less than a tomato, and the maltodextrin used as a flowing agent adds a trivial amount of carbohydrates (1g per serving). While maltodextrin can have a high glycemic index in some diabetics when consumed in large amounts, the amount in a few or even five servings is still insignificant in the "Food Exchange System". The magnesium oxide is a naturally occurring mineral found in magnesium supplements as well as antacids. The disodium or monocalcium phosphates used as ant-caking agents in the various flavors, and the cellulose gum, guar gum and pectin found in Wild Purple are all benign and quite harmless ingredients. Additionally, no more than two colorings are present per flavor - 2 colorings is the limit before point deductions start as you've probably noticed in other reviews here.
The one issue I do have with Hawaiian Punch is the choice of aspartame as a sweetener. Although it does taste fine in combination with Acesulfame Potassium, it cuts out anyone that has PKU (Phenylketonuria) from using the product. Because there are other sweeteners that are just as suitable and nearly the same cost, there's a .25 deduction. (+.75)

Overall Rating: 3.25 out of 4, which is pretty good for the sugar free versions of these powdered drink mixes. They're definitely worth a try if you've never had them before, but if you can't find the flavor you're looking for locally or want to get a good deal on larger quantities of flavors you already like, more than likely Amazon has whatever flavors of sugar free Hawaiian Punch you're looking for.
